The Lightning project, announced on December 22, 2004 and currently in development by the Mozilla Foundation, is an extension that adds calendar and scheduling functionality to the Mozilla Thunderbird mail and newsgroups client. Lightning is an iCalendar compatible calendar.

Unlike Mozilla Sunbird — or the discontinued Mozilla Calendar extension — Lightning aims to integrate tightly with Thunderbird.[1] The Lightning project is being developed simultaneously with the Sunbird project, and the code used for both tools is identical, with a few individual files for each program so that they run as intended.[2]

The first testing version of Lightning, version 0.1, was released on March 14, 2006 and 0.3 was released on October 10, 2006. 0.5 was released on June 27, 2007, 0.7 was released on October 25, 2007, 0.8 was released on April 4, 2008, 0.9 was released on September 23, 2008. 0.9 is the last planned release for Thunderbird 2, a calendar will be fully integrated into Thunderbird 3.[3][4]

Sun Microsystems has been contributing significantly to the Lightning Project [5] to provide users with an alternative free and open source choice to Microsoft Office by combining OpenOffice.org and Thunderbird with the Lightning Extension. Sun's key focus areas in addition to general bug fixing are calendar views, team/collaboration features and support for the Sun Java Calendar Server. [6]

"Lightning" is a working title and not the official name of the product; therefore, calling it "Mozilla Lightning" is technically incorrect.
